Q: Dear Nicole,
How do I break the news to my family (mother) that I’m seeing an older guy…that we’re in love, I’ll eventually be moving out and that there’s a possibility that I am pregnant?
A: That’s hard because the severity of your mother’s response likely depends on how much older this guy is to you. Which is something you don’t indicate in your question. You are not an adult yet and if you’re living in your mom’s house, you probably should start doing some serious planning for a ‘sit down’ with her. Let her know that you are in a relationship with a nice guy. Try to mention all of his positive attributes before you mention his name or age. Your pregnancy announcement (if necessary) probably won’t be well received and could be a bit overwhelming. You may want to separate all of that into two or three different conversations. You don’t want your mom to go out of her mind. If you aren’t pregnant, I strongly suggest you take some precautions in the future, like getting on the pill or having condoms handy. Hope this helps.
