WHAT ARE YOU DOING THIS SUMMER?

For many of you, the school year has already come a close, and for some, it will shortly. Have you figured out what you’ll be doing in the next three months? Don’t just sit there, find something constructive to do with your time. Instead of watching television and playing video games, get off the couch and start moving. Need ideas? Here are a list of summer activities to keep you occupied and help to mold you into a well rounded individual. (READ MORE)
GET A JOB. So you won’t have to bug mom and dad for cash to do the things that you enjoy including hanging with friends, going shopping, traveling, etc. But most importantly, don’t forget to save. If you’re under the age of 16, apply for a work permit with your school guidance counselor. If you’re over 16, look within the community first for local establishments including water parks, camps, malls, grocery stores, and movie theaters for work to make things more convenient for you. This is also the chance to become an entrepreneur. Reel in money by babysitting, dog walking, or even become a neighbor’s personal assistant if you have a driver’s license!
INTERN. Find a vocation and look up companies who have internships in your field of interest(s). There are many local radio stations and other really cool places around your city who are looking for the extra help.
START A BLOG. Blogging gives you the advantage of meeting new people, learning new things, and even making some money!
APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIPS. Search locally, online, and also the college you wish to attend in the future who may have scholarships that are specific to their institution. Read requirements before you start anything to ensure you’re eligible and follow directions carefully. Meet deadlines as well!
JOIN A SUMMER CAMP. There is a summer camp for almost everything from sports to art. Try contacting local colleges or universities for camps specializing in a specific major you’re interested in. These will allow you to take classes in the field of work you plan to pursue and gain the campus experience which is pretty cool!
READ A BOOK. As boring as reading may sound, it exercises your mind, builds perspective, and perfects writing skills, which is a total plus if you’d like to start a blog. There are tons of books out there in a variety of genres that will suit your taste. Just hit up your local library or bookstore. The choices are endless.
VOLUNTEER. Sign up for community outreach programs, non-profit organizations, or even volunteer at a local school. When our intern Amber was in junior high school, she spent one of her summer breaks teaching little kids how to read at an elementary school in her neighborhood.
Remember, be active and stay active! Be a well rounded student in and out of the classroom by engaging in extracurricular activities during free time. It’s a part of the magic formula we at TDO like to call success!
