SURVEY RESULTS: Unsafest Online Activity
No matter your age, the Internet is a fun place to hang out. It lets you keep in touch with friends and family and provides an enormous amount of information that can keep the most bored person entertained. Cyberspace is like visiting a big city without leaving your home. There are libraries, universities, museums, places to have fun, and plenty of opportunities to ➬ meet wonderful people from all walks of life. But, like any community, there are also some people and areas that you ought to avoid and others that you should approach only with caution. In order to use the internet safely, you must know how to make good decisions, and how to look at information critically. We recently addressed this very important and relevant issue on TD Radio. (LISTEN HERE). As always, we also asked our very important TDO members the following…What do you think is the most unsafe online activity for a teen and why? Check out the results below:
Less than 2% believe posting your current whereabouts via Twitter is a unsafe online activity.
“When you post where you are and what your doing every 5 seconds someone can easily find you. You can always change your number, bring a couple of friends with you on a blind date, and take down sexy pictures. But if you get into the habit of posting your whereabouts, predators can learn your patterns like where you go every Saturday or something.“ Tete, 15 (Middleton, WI)
18.8% say posting sexy photos of yourself on a social network is definitely unsafe.
Almost double that number and 33.9% think posting your personal info (phone number or home address) on a social network is a no-no!
“I think that posting your personal information, setting up a face to face meeting and posting sexy pics are all dangerous and can be very harmful to the person who posted it and the person that responds to it.“ Shayna, 18 (Schuykill Haven, PA)
Add a few more and 43.3% say setting up an “in person” date with someone you meet in an online chat room is the most unsafe online activity.
“Because you never know what that person might do to you… He/she might tell you everything you might want to hear and things like that, but in the long run you really don’t know what is up that person’s sleeve.” Amoni, 15, (Indianapolis,IN)
