SHERO: Dr. Bernice King (Activist / Attorney)

Bernice_KingDr. Bernice Albertine King (born in March 1963) is the youngest daughter of the late, human rights icon Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King. She is the current president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), and out of all of her 3 siblings she is the only one to follow her father’s legacy as a minister.

Berince was only five years old when her father was assassinated. An amazing speaker by the age of 17, Bernice addressed the United Nations at that tender age. She graduated from high school in Atlanta and later earned her psychology degree at Spelman University.  In 1990, she earned her Masters degree in Divinity, and later earned a Juris Doctorate from Emory University.

Dr. Bernice King has been very active in the community, often helping with various civil rights and educational programs.  In 2007, she founded the Be A King Scholarship at Spelman College in honor of her mother’s legacy.  The scholarship is available for two eligible seniors interested in music, education or psychology.  Later that year she was honored by the Georgia Alliance of African American Attorneys with the Commitment to Community Award. In October 2009, she became the first woman to lead the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) as their president. She is also a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated.
