ARTIST ON OUR RADAR: V.V. Brown

“I can’t remember a time when music was not a part of me. When I was five, I remember writing my first song on the piano. I played the same notes over and over again and from that moment I just knew that music would be a huge part of my life.” – V.V. Brown

Evenings were spent in the attic with her five brothers and sisters playing at being in a band and dreaming about being on the popular UK music show Top Of The Pops. At school, V V was almost unrecognizable – lunch-breaks would be spent sitting in the school field on her blazer wondering, as she says, “why the grass was green”. Feeling liberated rather than lonely, she immersed herself in her own thoughts. “I’ve always felt slightly on the edge of the circle,” she explains, and this double life, flitting from extrovert to introvert as the mood takes her, now runs through her album. Every Sunday she’d go to church and sing in the gospel choir; at home her mum and dad would listen to Aretha, The Rolling Stones, Ruth Brown, Elvis Presley, Queen and the music from Super Marioland.

With a year’s worth of continuous praise from her home base U.K, now enthusiastically echoed by a thumbs up Stateside from media tastemakers, her debut American EP (The Attic)was released digitally on October 20, 2009. The full album TRAVELING LIKE THE LIGHT, described in the U.K. press as “a perfect pop cocktail” (The Sun) and “Spector-ish pop as slick as her black pompadour…her vocal shines through every track” (Elle), is set for U.S. release on February 9, 2010. Just like us, Hollywood couldn’t wait.

V V’s album tracks have enjoyed sneak previews in several high-profile television shows around the networks and cable: “Back In Time” is heard in the third episode of CW’s top-rated new series The Vampire Diaries as well as CSI: NY; “Shark in The Water” in MTV’s The City and “Everybody” in a promo spot for ABC’s Desperate Housewives. She also is launching a website devoted to retro fashion in a modern context, and has made runway appearances at supermodel Naomi Campbell’s charity event, and at London Fashion Week.
