TEEN DIARIES: “Changing the World is Fun”
by Bianka, 20 (Columbus, GA)
Who says volunteer work has to be mundane and tedious? Why can’t you have fun doing something that will not only impact others, but will also help change your perspective of world ? Recently, I had the opportunity to attend the UGA Heroes Olympics and I had the most fun that I’ve had in a while. UGA Heroes is ➬ an organization that provides quality of life to children infected or affected in some way by HIV/AIDS, and the Olympics marks the end of a semester-long campaign to raise money for the organization.
At the Olympics, we were divided into teams and competed against each other in games such as tug-of-war, an obstacle course, and football. Although the events were catered to the youth, the different stations allowed for me to interact in games that I had not played since I was younger. The greater impact, however, was the feeling that I was actually helping someone relax and have fun, if only for one day, and forget about the struggles they are facing on a daily basis.
